Biography

(James) Gordon Brown was born in 1951 in Giffnock Renfreshire. He grew up in Kirkcaldy Fife and studied at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MA (1972) and PhD (1982).

He served as a Labour MP (1987-2015), as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1997–2007) and as Prime Minister (2007-2010).

Brown served as University Rector from session 1972/3 through to 1974/5. He also set up an the unofficial commission to look into the structure of the University.
