Biographical / Historical
The British Environment Institute was proposed as a 'think tank' and advisory body to aid environmental decision making, following the publication of the influential ecological text 'A Blueprint for Survival' (first published as a special edition of The Ecologist in January 1972). The Preliminary Committee was chaired by Professor T.R.E Southwood of Imperial College, and included individuals, including Waddington, from various institutions. The Committee met several times between 1972 and 1974 to discuss the potential formation of the Institute. It appears, however, that the Institute was never officially established.
