Scope and Contents

A collection of letters and documents which relate to the use of electrocution and suffocation of animals. These documents illustrate a difference of opinion between the SSPV and the RSPCA.

1. Copies of letters between Mr Languill and William Younger about the differences between Captain Fairholme and Netta Ivory's opinions towards the use of electrocution as a means of destroying animals, dated between 21st-27th June 1923

2. A letter and newspaper cutting about a 20,000 volt electric shock not being enough to kill a man, 4th November 1924

3. A copy of a letter from Edwin Ruthorn Weeks, Kansas City, about the use of electrocution as a means of destroying animals, and their objections to it, 30th May 1923

4. Three copies of a pamphlet "A subject of interest to animal lovers, the chloroform lethal box", distributed by the Edmonton and Enfield Animal Shelter, local shelter committee. The pamphlet contains instruction for using a box containing chloroform to kill cats and dogs.

5. Printed extract from a letter to Miss Ivory from Edwin R. Weeks regarding a 1917 report on the case against the use of electricity for lethal purposes, 7 May 1923

6. Two letters from the RSPCA to Netta Ivory which describes how the electical machines, used for "the destruction of unwanted animals", work and how the RSPCA prefers electrocution to chloroform poisoning.

7. Two letters from Violet Wood to Miss Ivory about witnessing the use of electrocution on unwanted animals. Wood describes it in a positive light and saw the death as instantaneous, 28th September and 15th October 1920.

8. A letter from L. Snow, who developed the chloroform lethal box, to Miss Ivory about investigating the failures of electricution and gathering evidence, 30th April 1923

9. Copies of letters from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which regard the prefered use of chloroform over electrocution as a means of destruction, 1928
