Poyais land grant for 60 acres from Gregor MacGregor, April 1834
Grant of 60 acres of land in Poyais given by Gregor MacGregor. The document is signed by MacGregor himself, as well as Hugart Sempill, William M. Peacock, A. Hillary and a fourth person. 'Poyais' was a fictional Central American territory that MacGregor, a Scottish soldier and confidence trickster, claimed to rule as 'Cazique' (leader). Many lost their savings by investing in spurious 'Poyaisian' government bonds and land certificates. The text is in English, with a translation in French.
