Biography

On 4th October 1905 the Carnegie Dunfermline College of Hygiene and Physical Training opened in Dunfermline. It was founded by the Andrew Carnegie Trust as a training college for women students of Physical Education. Initially it consisted of only a small gymnasium in Canmore St and Baths. In 1908 the college opened to men and in 1909 the college was recognised by the Scottish Education Department as a central institution for the purpose of education (Scotland) Act 1908. Between 1913-14 new college buildings were erected, and the college was renamed ‘Dunfermline College of Hygiene and Physical Education'. Responsibility for training was assumed by the National Committee for Training of Teachers in 1921 and management of the college was delegated to trustees. In 1931 the National Committee for the Training of Teachers delegated the management of the college to a committee of management and from that date only women students were trained at DCPE. The male students transferred to Jordan Hill College, Glasgow. The first board of governors for the College was instituted in 1959. Between 1939-46 the college at Dunfermline transferred to the Teachers Training Centre in Aberdeen temporarily as the buildings were commandeered by the navy during the second world war, and again in 1950 the college transferred to Woolmanhill, Aberdeen due to problems at the Dunfermline site, particularly concerning over-crowding. Hygiene was then dropped from the name of the college, and the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust severed connections because the College was no longer in Dunfermline. The final move occurred in 1966 when the College transferred to the current Cramond Campus, Edinburgh as it was decided that central Scotland was a better place for the College. In 1986 DCPE merged with Moray House College of Education.
