Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics Research - Edinburgh Research Station. IAPGR (1986-1993)

 Organization

Biography

The AFRC Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics Research (IAPGR) was formed in 1986 as part of the AFRC's strategy to consolidate agricultural research on fewer and larger sites under eight new institutes. IAPGR was formed from the AFRC Institute of Animal Physiology, Cambridge (which became the Cambridge Research Station), the Animal Breeding Research Organisation (ABRO) in Edinburgh, and part of the Poultry Research Centre (PRC), Edinburgh (both of which became the Edinburgh Research Station). Meanwhile, the nutrition, biochemistry and pathology programmes of the former PRC were initially incorporated into the AFRC Institute of Grassland and Animal Production (IGAP) until 1990, when it also became part of IAPGR. IAPGR-ERS was an Associated Research Institute of the University of Edinburgh, as had been ABRO and PRC.

Roger Land, who had been director of ABRO since 1982, became the first director of the Edinburgh Research Station of IAPGR (IAPGR-ERS) until his death in 1988. Peter Lake became acting Head of Station until the appointment of Grahame Bulfield in the same year. Barry Cross was the first director of the Institute, and was succeeded in 1989 by R.B. Heap. The former ABRO research continued in its existing premises initially, before consolidating on the former PRC site at Roslin in 1989.

The aims of IAPGR-ERS were to advance fundamental scientific knowledge of the molecular, cellular and systemic processes that contribute to the development, fertility, behaviour and welfare of livestock. Further objectives were to seek the genetic improvement of livestock by research on gene transfer and embryo manipulation.

A review in 1992 recommended that the AFRC split IAPGR into two Institutes, in order to reflect their diverging research interests on the two sites. This took effect from 1 April 1993 with the creation of the Babraham Institute and Roslin Institute.
