The song is composed of thirty-two lines arranged as twelve verses of couplets and it appears that the chorus is given twice with the main difference being in the vocables. Carmichael notes 'Probably by the wife of [-] Macleod of Rararsay [Ratharsaidh/Raasay] who had been his dairymaid. She made an excellent wife.'
