Scope and Contents Notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael containing field and transcribed material. The notebook is inscribed on the front inside cover with the following: 'Scrap Book MS No1 Alex[ander] Carmichael (of Lismore) Inland Revenue Lochmaddy N[orth] Uist] 1864'. On the recto side of the fly leaf is written 'Angus MacDonald Staoinebrig tale teller' and on the verso side of the fly leaf is written 'Bought at Drew's Saint columb Cornwall this 17 day of Nov[ember] 1864 A. A. Carmichael p2/3'....

Scope and Contents Story entitled 'Mac Mhuirich' probably collected from John MacInnes, aged 70 years, Stadhlaigearraidh/Stilligarry, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist. The story tells how MacMhurich is coming back from Rum [Rhum] when 'gille glas' asks if MacMhuirich will take him as far as Uist [Uibhist]. Reluctantly, MacMhuirich agrees exchanging some balast for the gille glas. En route water starts coming in so all are called upon to bale out the vessel but to no avail. The gille glas takes control of the steering...

Scope and Contents Story entitled 'Mac Mhuirich Mor' probably collected from Penelope MacLellan, Ormacleit/Ormaclete, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist. The text bears a number of annotations and amendments in pencil and has been scored through in ink as if transcribed elsewhere. The story tells how MacMhuirich Mòr found a small cat-like creature and took it home. His wife urged him to return the creature to where he had found it but he refused.
