Guthrie, Alexander, fl 1570s-1580s (Town Clerk of Edinburgh)
Biography
Alexander Guthrie was the son of Alexander Guthrie, who had served as Edinburgh's Town Clerk (or "common clerk") 1557-1566. The younger Alexander served in the same role 1580-1608 when he was succeeded by his son, Alexander, and John Hay. On 5 Oct 1596, he was admitted as a Burgess of Edinburgh "as eldest son of umquhile Alexander Guthrie, common clerk of the said and simityme deyne of gild thairoff"

Clement Litill bequest
Instrument dated 14 October 1580, recording the delivery of of books bequeathed by Edinburgh advocate, Clement Litill to the town and kirk of Edinburgh.
It includes a copy of the minute of Edinburgh Town Council and inventory of the books written out by Alexander Guthrie, Town Clerk. According to Charles P. Finlayson, this was intended to hang on the library wall. It is currently unclear which Alexander Guthrie (father or son) was Town Clerk in October 1580.
