Biography

William Smith Mitchell graduated MA from the University in 1932. He subsequently completed a PhD at the University of Aberdeen. He held assistant librarian posts at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen respectively, before becoming Librarian at King's College, Newcastle upon Tyne, and then at thee University of Newcastle upon Tyne. A founder member of the Scottish Society of the History of Medicine, he served as its fourth President, 1957-60. He died in 1982.
