Flora Philip was born on the Isle of Mull in 1865. She was one of the first cohort of eight women to graduate from the University of Edinburgh in 1893, having previously studied at the Edinburgh Association for the University Education for Women.
In July 1943, three of the eight joined Principal Sir Thomas Holland on the platform for the graduation ceremony in the McEwan Hall: alongside Flora there was Maude Elizabeth Newbigin and Amelia Hutchison Stirling.
