Biography

Agnes was the seventh child of Robert Anderson and Ann Lothian and was born in 5 Merchant Street, Edinburgh. She had two older sisters, Euphemia and Ann.

When she was nineteen, Agnes married William Baillie McKenzie, who lived at 19 Gayfield Square. William McKenzie was a partner in McKenzie & Dallas, silk and lace merchants, whose shop was on a fine corner site at 27 Princes Street (later R. W. Forsyth). The McKenzie family lived at 51 North Bridge, above their warehouse, till Mr McKenzie dissolved his connection with Mr Dallas, and the business was moved further west to 111 Princes Street, where at last the house and shop could be together.

William McKenzie visited London on business from time to time, sometimes with Robert Anderson, his wife's brother, sailing from Leith to London in the ‘Royal William’. Later he forsook silk for wool, becoming a manufacturer of Shetland shawls and hose, and selling woollen underwear, moving shop finally to 126 Princes Street, near the West End. Agnes and William had five daughters. Ann, the eldest, was a precocious child, able to read a little at the age of four.

Agnes survived her husband, and she died at 2 Torphichen Street, Edinburgh, at the age of seventy-two.
