Biography

William Butter was born in 1726 at Kirkwall, Orkney and was the eldest child of William Butter, excise officer and Margaret Murdoch. He graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1761 and was admitted a fellow of the College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1763. Around this time he set up practice in Derby, which was successful and where he remained until moving to London in 1782. The following year, he was admitted a Licentiate of the College of Physicians. In 1767, he married Catherine Douglas, daughter of John Douglas, 3rd Bart. of Kelhead. He died at his house in Lower Grosvenor Street, London, in 1805.
