Biography

Alexander Falconer Giles was born on the 20th of October 1881 in St Giles, Edinburgh, to Alexander Giles and Cecilia Dudgeon. He graduated with an MA from the University of Edinburgh in 1904, and studied at Balliol College sometime before 1914. Giles taught Classical History at the University of Edinburgh from 1915 to the late 1940s, and became Deputy Secretary of the University in 1922.

He married Jean Clarke McGeorge in 1914 in Dumfries. He died in 1963 in Newington, Edinburgh.

In the letter, the couple recall their memories of Thomson and Lady Thomson, referring to stays at Glennapp, and how happy Thomson and Lady Thomson were together. They also recall how kind and interesting Thomson was.

Includes a short annotation by Lady Thomson stating the sender to be Sandy Giles Mother.
