Biography

Catherine Stephens, Countess of Essex, was an English operatic singer and actress. She was well known for her soprano voice, and performed in concerts and theatrical productions around the country. In 1835 Stephens retired from the stage and in 1838 she married George Capel-Coningsby, fifth Earl of Essex (1757-1839). The octogenarian earl died a year later and Catherine continued to live in Belgrave Square, in the house in which she was married, until her death from bronchitis in 1882.
