Biography
Hugh O'Neill was an Irish Gaelic Lord and the second Earl of Tyrone. He was born in the lordship of Tyrone, in the province of Ulster in 1550, second son to Matthew O'Neill, first baron of Dungannon (d. 1558) and his wife Siobhan, daughter of Constantine Maguire. He was best known for leading the resistance during the Nine Years' War, also known as Tyrone's Rebellion, against the Tudor conquest of Ireland. After his defeat and loss of his land he fled to the Spanish Netherlands and thence on to Rome where he died in 1616.
