Biography

John Macken was an Irish poet and literary editor. In 1808 he established the Enniskillen Chronicle, also known as the Erne Packet. He left Ireland to become a sailor in the Navy and was present at the bombardment of Algiers in 1816. In 1818 he went to London and began publishing poetry under the pseudonym Ismael Fitzadam, contributing poems to the Literary Gazette. He published two volumes of poetry, neither of which were successful, and in 1821 he returned to Ireland and resumed his editorship of the Chronicle.
