Biography

Born Thomas Loch, the son of Eleanor Dalyell of The Binns and Gordon Loch (1887-1983), Tam was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Eton College and Kings College, Cambridge, before training to be a teacher at Moray House College of Education. He then taught at Bo'ness Academy for three years.

In 1962, he was elected Member of Parliament for West Lothian and, in 1983, for Linlithgow. in 2001, he became Father of the House and retired from office in 2005. He served as Rector of the University of Edinburgh, 2003-2006.
