Scope and Contents

The Blacket area, originally within the policies of Newington House, has some of the earliest villa in the southern outer suburbs, dating from 1825 onwards. Handwritten title by Alasdair Geddes. A print from this glass plate negative was included in the "Open Spaces as Gardens and Playgrounds" section of Geddes' replacement "Cities and Town Planning Exibition". See Coll-1167/B/24.

North British Hotel, former General Post Office building, Nelson Monument beyond. North Bridge with a tram car, and Waverely station in the foreground. There are two slides, Coll-1167/B/26/12/7-8. Note also Old Waverely Market Hall and Register House on the extreme left. Also old building in Princes Street.

Scope and Contents North British Hotel, former General Post Office building, Nelson Monument and also part of the old Jail (not visible in Coll-1167/B/26/12/7), as well as North Bridge with a tram. In both Coll-1167/B/26/12/7-8, note the Register House on the extreme left. Also, Waverley Market Hall - low building rising above glass roof of station. This was a large and fundamentally empty hall, used for shows of all kinds, circuses and sometimes dramatic entertainment. At certain times, there were flower beds...

This must refer to the Old Infirmary or Surgical Hospital between Drummond Street and High School Yards, now part of the University of Edinburgh. The City Wall in the Pleasance is still in existence. The exact site of this picture has not been identified. Handwritten title by Alasdair Geddes. A print of this glass plate negative was exhibited in the "Squalor and Romance" section of Geddes' replacement "Cities and Town Planning Exhibition".

Scope and Contents Richmond Place. The title detailed on the original envelope read "Ethylotragedy Arithocomedy (O T garden & neighbour). A tragedy for ethyl (a sad state for the chemical or for alcohol) and a comedy in numbers (at least four bits of glass) illustrates the writer's sense of humour. He means that the glass slide (or plate) has been broken. The writer has been identified as Alasdair Geddes. He may have been recording his father's words. Scope and Contents This site is a triangular open space opposite the present (1988) Deaconess Hospital which would be on the right beyond the edge of the picture. See print Coll-1167/B/26/20/6. This view is looking north. The hospital was re-used as Lothian Health Board Headquarters in March 1991. The triangular open space in this photograph is occupied by the rather elaborate public house. The sign over the door reads "G Kirk". The subsequent open space is apparently now to be built over again (1997)....
