Biography

Cert. Social Study 1948. Daughter of Dr Elliot, Scottish military doctor. Sister of Sir Gerald Elliot, Edinburgh.

Died in her home sometime during the week of July 4, 2011. She was one of five children. Her father, Dr. Elliot, was a Scottish military doctor who served before and during WWII. She is survived by one daughter, Jean Jarman and her husband Steve Jarman and their three children Michael, Brian and David. She leaves behind her sister Mrs. MC Douglas-Jones of Wales and one brother Sir Gerald Elliot of Edinburgh. She was preceded in death by her two brothers Ian Elliot of Scotland and Steven Elliot of London. She, also, leaves behind many nieces and nephews in Great Britain. She served in WWII in Great Britain in the Auxiliary Territorial Service and manned an AA gun. After the war she completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh in social work. She then went to the University of Chicago and received a Masters Degree in social work. She met her late husband Brian Ledley at Chicago and once she had completed her degree they were married in Scotland. They then moved to Australia to wait to receive a visa to move to the United States. She immigrated to Maryland in 1961. She was involved in the starting of Head Start and along with Helen Hibbard Burns created the pre-school at Colesville Presbyterian Church. She assisted in creating Emergency Homes, Inc. (which later was renamed Extended Hand, Inc.) to help families that either did not have a home or were living in substandard conditions. She spent many years as a tenant counselor for the Franklin Apartments in Tacoma Park. In the last 15 years she has volunteered at SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program) assisting Seniors with questions about Medicare and Medicaid. Her life was devoted to helping others in need and creating a scholarship for the University of Chicago to help students from Great Britain who wanted to study social work.
