Biography

Dr Macleod was born and brought in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. He attended the Nicholson Institute and remained a fluent Gaelic speaker all his fife. He joined Edinburgh University Medical School in 1931 and graduated in 1937.

Following graduation he joined a General Medical Practice in Consett, County Durham, assisting a fellow Hebridean, Dr Kenneth MacDonald. In August he married Agnes [Nancy] Scott, a Royal Hospital for Sick Children Hospital trained nurse from Selkirk in the Borders.

Dr Macleod was called up in September 1939 and served with the Royal Army Medical Corp until 1946. He served in France, including evacuation from Dunkirk, Egypt, Malta and Italy, finishing his overseas war service in Rome. He was twice mentioned in Despatches.

After the war he trained as a Radiologist in Edinburgh, becoming a Consultant attending the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, The Deaconess and the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospitals. He also entered Private Practice. Following his retiral he undertook locum appointments in New Zealand, coincidentally at the same time as a British and Irish Rugby Lions tour in 1977.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh became a major professional commitment. Between 1960 and 1981 he served as Treasurer, Registrar and Councillor, including representing the College on the General Medical Council.

Throughout his life Dr Macleod kept in touch with many of his fellow graduates, organising a series of reunions including a Golden Jubilee Reunion in Edinburgh in 1987. He was presented with a plate in appreciation of his service.

Dr and Mrs Macleod had three children, the oldest of whom is a retired Consultant Surgeon from West Lothian and Edinburgh. Their daughter emigrated to Australia where she was a High School English teacher until retirement, and their younger son is a retired Police Officer. All three children married and at the time of Dr Macleod's death he had six grandchildren. Mrs Macleod died 12 years after her husband.
