Biography

Joseph Bouhsira was one of the first renowned Moroccan photographers. He opened his studio in the Jewish quarter of Fez in the early 1910s. In 1911, he covered military campaigns in the South of Morocco, and opened a second studio in this region, in Boudnib. His business flourished, which allowed him to open several branches: one in Ouezzane, and one in Ksar es Souk. He died prematurely in 1943, leaving behind several albums on Fez's Jewish community. Two thirds of his work were lost when one of his studios was sold.
