Biography
Esther Barbara Chalmers was born in Edinburgh in 1894, the youngest child of Chief Justice of British Guyana Sir David Chalmers (1835-1899) and Janet Alice Chalmers (née Lorimer) (1857-1946). She graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1922. She spent many years in Liege, Belgium, where she was involved in voluntary social work and activism. She returned to Scotland in the 1960s, where she researched her family history and wrote an autobiography.
Her siblings were: David Patrick Chalmers (b 1880), Hannah Helen Chalmers (b 1882), Alison Bell Chalmers (b 1884), Thomas Michael Chalmers (1886-1904), and James Lorimer Chalmers (b 1888).
