Biography

Pierre Philippe Jean Marie d'Orléans, Duke of Penthièvre, was born in 1845, the son of François d'Orléans, Prince of Joinville. On his father's side, Pierre d'Orléans was the grandson of French king Louis Philippe I. On his mother's side, Princess Francisca of Brazil, he was the grandson of Pedro I and IV, Emperor of Brazil and King of Portugal and the Algarves. He never married, but had two children with Angélique Marie Augustine Lebesgue.

Pierre d'Orléans was expelled from France with his family when the Revolution overthrowing his grandfather, King Louis Philippe I, broke out in 1848. He grew up in England. In 1859 he left for Scotland to study at the Royal High School in Edinburgh. He was admitted to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduation, he received an honorary appointment as an acting ensign in the Union Navy in 1863 and served on the USS John Adams. He completed a number of voyages and travelled around the world. With the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870 he returned to France and joined the French navy.
