Biography

William Hastie was born in 1842 at Wanlockhead in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He received an MA in Philosophy from the University of edinburgh in 1867 and a BD in 1869. He received further study from the University of Glasgow in 1870 and 1871 under John Caird, Professor of Divinity, and in the Netherlands and Germany. In 1875, he became a probationer in the Church of Scotland in order to teach abroad.

In 1878 Hastie was appointed principal of the General Assembly's Institution in Calcutta.
