Biography

Hannah Stodart was a Scottish artist who married advocate James Lorimer (1818-1890) when she was 16 years old and he was 33 years old. The couple had six children: James Lorimer (1852-1898), Hannah Cassels Lorimer (1854-1947), John Henry Lorimer (1856-1936), Janet Alice Lorimer (1857-1946), Caroline Louise Lorimer (1861-1946), and Robert Stodart Lorimer (1864-1929). Hannah Stodart and her family lived at 1 Brunsfield Crescent, Edinburgh, and spent their summers at Kellie Castle in Pittenweem, Fife.

Hannah Stodart encouraged her children's higher education, including her female children, and had an enthusiasm for learning herself. She attended the Edinburgh Ladies' Educational Association and won two prizes in moral philosophy.
