Biography

John Henry Lorimer was born to parents Hannah Stodart Lorimer (1835-1916) and James Lorimer (1818-1890) in 1856. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, University of Edinburgh, and Royal Scottish Academy. He travelled throughout Europe, including Spain, Italy and Algiers. John Henry, often nicknamed 'JH' by family members, was a successful artist whose paintings were featured at the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Academy. His oil painting 'The Ordination of Elders in a Scottish Kirk' hangs at the National Gallery of Scotland. Many of his paintings portray the Lorimer family's summer home, Kellie Castle in Pittenweem, Fife.

John Henry Lorimer's siblings were: James Lorimer (1852-1898), Hannah Cassels im Thurn (née Lorimer) (1854-1947), Janet Alice Chalmers (née Lorimer) (1857-1946), Caroline Louise Lorimer (1861-1946), and Robert Stodart Lorimer (1864-1929).
