Biography
Ernest Nys was born in 1851 in Kortrijk, Belgium. He was educated at the Universities of Ghent, Heidelberg, Leipzig and Berlin, studying law. He succeeded Alphonse Rivier as Professor of International Law at the University of Brussels in 1898. He aided anarchist Peter Kropotkin with his book: 'The Great French Revolution, 1789-1793'. Nys was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague, and the Institut de Droit International. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in international arbitration from 1906-1916 and again in 1919. He was a contemporary of Scottish international advocate James Lorimer.
