Biography

Alphonse Pierre Octave Rivier was a Swiss lawyer, university teacher and legal historian. He earned doctorates in law in Berlin, Lausanne and Paris. In 1862 he took up a post at the University of Berlin as a private lecturer and in 1863 accepted a professorship at the University of Bern. He also lectured at the Free University of Brussels, where he held the office of Swiss Consul General for Belgium from 1886. His interests lay in Roman law and international law. He edited six volumes of the yearbook of the Institut de Droit International, of which he was Secretary General from 1878-1887.
