Biography

Sir John Robert Seeley was born in London to publisher Robert Benton Seeley, an advocate of Evangelical Anglicanism. Seeley was educated at the City of London School, going on to study Classics at Christ's College, University of Cambridge. He was elected a fellow of Christ's and became a Classical Studies tutor. He was appointed Professor of Latin at University College London in 1863. In 1869, he married Mary Agnes Phillot (1839-1921). In the same year, he was appointed Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge.
