Biography

Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Baronet MP, was born at Kenmure in 1818. He was educated at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. He succeeded to the Keir estates in 1847. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1849. Stirling-Maxwell served as MP for Perthshire from 1852-1868 and again from 1874-1878. He was appointed Member of the Universities Commission in 1859 and Historical Manuscripts Commission from 1872-1878. He was elected Rector of the University of St. Andrews in 1862 and the University of Edinburgh in 1871. He was elected Chancellor to the University of Glasgow in 1875. He succeeded to the Maxwell Baronetcy, Nova Scotia, in 1865. He published many historical and art historical publications, including 'Annals of the Artists of Spain' (1847) and 'The Cloister Life of the Emperor Charles the Fifth' (1852).

Stirling-Maxwell married Lady Anna Maria Leslie-Melville, daughter of David Leslie-Melville, 8th Earl of Leven. In 1877, he married author and society figure Caroline Norton.
