Biography

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Russell was educated at Pangbourne Nautical College, Berkshire; qualified in medicine at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School (1941); MRCS, LRCP. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II. He gained a diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene at Liverpool University (1948), and in 1951 gained a postgraduate diploma in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He then joined the Colonial Medical Service, and by 1953 he was medical administrator of the Gold Coast Hospital, Ghana. He was public health officer with the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) of the World Health Organisation (WHO), 1954-1961. In 1966 he was appointed senior lecturer in the Department of Social Medicine, University of Edinburgh, and was on the staff of the Department of Social Medicine, Usher Institute, in 1969. He was President of the Scottish branch of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1973-1975.
