James Nairn(e) was born in 1629. He attended the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1650 under Regent Thomas Craufurd (Class number 62), alongside future Regent, John Wishart.
He served as Keeper of the Library at the University of Edinburgh, from 1652, leaving the following year to become minister at Holyroodhouse and later at Wemyss, Fife. He went on bequeath his library of 138 books to the University in 1678.
