Hillyard, Henry, 1803?-1873
Biography
Hillyard was the scene painter at the Theatre Royal, Edinburgh in the late 1820s and early 1830s; he executed at least one panorama - 'Napoleon Buonaparte in Egypt' (1830) - for the New Rotunda on the Mound. The sixth Symbolae Scoticae album includes a series of 9 annotated sketches by Hillyard (Coll-10/6/133 - Coll-10/6/141) for an apparently unrealised panorama of the Clyde, gifted to Adam White by Henry Eyre. As White notes (Coll-10/4/57) Hillyard subsequently emigrated to the United States, where he enjoyed a successful career in New York theatre.
