Biography
Born March 12 March 1904 in Helmsdale, Sutherland. He trained as an educational missionary at Aberdeen Teacher Training College for 3 years, then was sent to Kikuyu, Kenya in 1924. He married Alta Ingersoll Knapp, daughter of Rev. William P Knapp, in 1930. She was part of the Gospel Missionary Society of America based at Kambui, Kiambu District, where she ran the ‘big girls work’. Together they moved to Chogoria, Kenya where he served as headteacher for the school from 1930-1940. They had two children Margaret (1932); Myrtle (1933). Alta died in Kenya 19 March 1942. Macpherson married Ina Hood, and together had Isobel Janet (1946); Elspeth Mary (Glasgow) (8 July 1948). Macpherson served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa from 1958 to 1961 and in 1970 he wrote the history of the church, "The Presbyterian Church in Kenya". Ina and Robert died in Dunfermline in 1984.
