Scope and Contents Notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael containing songs, poems, tales, names, vocabulary and expressions collected in the Outer Hebrides [Na h-Eileanan an Iar]. The first part of the volume contains transcriptions taken as Carmichael listened to informants in 1877 while the second part appears to be copies of previous transcriptions of material collected by Carmichael and Rev Malcolm MacPhail in 1874 and written into the notebook in 1891. Amongst the material is a version of the lament...

Scope and Contents Note relating to the MacCodrum family, to which John MacCodrum, the bard, belonged, including that the family were 'Oda[i]r nan ron' [Caisteal Odair of the seals] and that their land was in Griminis/Griminish, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist. John MacCodrum's patronymic is given and mention is made of 'Poul rua (Maclean) Houghge[arry]' [Hogha Gearraidh/Hougharry] that he was ''s motha is a mac Odrum' []. Notes on the family of Flora MacDonald 'nin Raoil ic Aonais oig ic Raoil ic Ailein' [Flòraidh nighean Raghnaill 'ic Aonghais Ò ig 'ic Raghnaill 'ic Ailein]. Aonghas Og [Angus MacDonald], the grandfather of Flora Macdonald is described as 'a celebrated soldier'. The item also lists where she was reputedly born and lived after her father died and quotes from the poem written by John MacCodrum to Allan MacDonald, Flora's husband 'Ò ran Do Chaiptean Ailean Chinnseborgh'.
