Biography

A native of Edinburgh and a son of Joseph “Guissepe” Rampini (1804-1863), teacher of Italian language and literature in the Naval and Military Academy and Vice Consul at Edinburgh. At age 20 Robert took first place in the Indian Civil Service examination and was appointed to Bengal. After several years spent in administrative work, he was appointed Judge, Dacca, Bengal, in 1864, and Assistant Magistrate, Bhudruck, in 1868. In 1888 he was appointed to the Calcutta High Court, becoming Lord Chief Justice in 1907. In 1908 he retired and changed his name by Royal licence. (Aberdeen Press and Journal (Tuesday 18 October 1927), p 8). When on leave in Edinburgh he resided in his family house at 10 Gloucester Place.
