Following the completion of the fifth Edition of Manual of Elementary Geology in February 1855 [otherwise known as 'Elements of Geology'] Charles and Mary Lyell travel to Germany, where this Notebook was written. At the beginning, Lyell is in Brunswick, Germany, but most entries thereafter identify his location as Berlin.
