Biography
Mary Hunter was born in 1864. She is the granddaughter of John Hunter (a ploughman) and of Helen Hunter (née Helen Kedslie), the daughter of William Hunter (born in Berwick in 1820 and died in 1898, he kept livery stables) and of Ann Hunter (née Ann Muir Aikman, 1822-1904). She was the youngest of 6 siblings: John Hunter (reverend), Margaret Hunter (housekeeper), Annie Hunter, Ellen Hunter, William Hunter (kept livery stables).
Mary Hunter passed university examinations in Logic, Metaphysics and Education at the University of St Andrews in 1887. In 1889, she passed the university examinations in Education, Logic and Metaphysics, and Geography with honours, and English with honours and obtained the title of Literate in Art, still at the University of St Andrews. In 1892, she got a drawing certificate in freehand drawing, linear perspective, model drawing and geometrical drawing from the Department of Science and Art of the Committee of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council on Education. Mary Hunter also got a ‘teacher’s certificate of the second class’ proving that she was examined for a certificate and placed in the First Division of Candidates of the Second Year; comments on her class inspections praise Mary Hunter’s good appearance and excellent skills. She married Donald Campbell (1837-1957) at St Cuthbert’s Parish Church, Edinburgh, in July 1895 and gave birth to her only child, Archibald Hunter Campbell, on 21 May 1902. Mary Campbell died in 1954, aged 90.
