Cunningham, Thomas, c1827-c1860 (Medical Doctor)
Biography
Thomas Cunningham, youngest son of John Cunningham of Glenwood Mills, Belfast, first matriculated at the University of Edinburgh in 1846/7 (having previously studied at the University of Belfast) and graduated MD in 1849, his thesis titled On the Exploring Needle. He established and maintained a strong professional relationship with Prof. James Young Simpson, who had taught him.
Around 1850, he served as Annual President of the Hunterian Medical Society and previously as House Surgeon of the Royal Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh. In 1851, he was living with his sister, Elizabeth Wright Cunningham, in Currie village, Midlothian and was then described as being in General Practice. In 1854, he married Jessie Steven Ramage at Currie and had they had two daughters. Thomas returned to Belfast in 1858 and died there the following year.
