Seawell, a former pupil of Ewart's, writes as a teacher of biology at a State Normal School in Warrensburg, Missouri, where he has recently been conducting general botany and zoology research. In particular he has been investigating the ecological relations of the life-forms of a series of small freshwater lakes in the area.
