Biographical Note:

Robert Harkness studied at the University of Edinburgh between 1833 and 1834, under Robert Jameson and J.D. Forbes, where he gleaned a keen interest in geology. On his return to his home in Ormskirk, he studied the local geology, coal measures and sandstone in particular. His papers were read before the Geological Society of London. In 1853 he was made Professor of Geology in Queen's College Cork, and was elected fellow of the Royal Society in 1856.
