Charter issued by Sriranga Deva Raya [Sriranga I] of Vijayanagara, 1580/1 CE
Scope and Contents
Charter in Sanskrit on 5 plates, issued by Sriranga Deva Raya [Sriranga I] of Vijayanagara in the year of the Saka era 1502 (CE 1580/1). The inscription is clearly engraved on one side of each of the plates, which are moulded in the characteristic stele shape of the period (with a rounded central extension at the top). The inscription appears to include a signature in a different script (?Telugu) at the end. The seal on the ring depicts the royal insignia of a boar (a physical manifestation, 'avatar', of Vishnu), a dagger, the moon and the sun.
