Figures and plates for publications, 1940-c.1968
Scope and Contents
The material consists of photographic material, diagrams and illustrations used as figures or plates for Waddington's publications, including:
- various articles, published in scientific journals, including Evolution, the Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology, the Journal of Experimental Biology and Genetics among others;
- Waddington's books, including Principles of Embryology (1956), New Patterns in Genetics and Development (1962) and Towards a Theoretical Biology Vol. 1 (1969).

There may be copyright restrictions on much of the material here, as many figures were taken from various journals and sources, and the copyright holder is not always clear or attributed. Waddington also frequently reused the same figures for different publications, so it may be that some items here were used for more than one publication. Some figures have their provenance labelled on the back of the image.

Arrangement
Many of the images were grouped together seemingly at random, and it became apparent that many related images had been dispersed and stored separately. Where possible, 'sets' of related images have been returned together and identifications of the publications the images relate to have been made wherever possible.Those images that still remain unidentified have been grouped together as such.

Existence and Location of Originals
The majority of the illustrations appear to be the originals or draft figures and plates, with the relevant annotations instructing the printer on scaling/positioning of the image,etc. However, some figures appear in printed and copied form with no accompanying originals.
