Scope and Contents
These volumes contain the names of students, recorded at the occasion of the first time of matriculating. Subsequent years of matriculating were not recorded here, but are recorded in the Matriculation Albums. Occasionally students who changed courses were recorded again. There were changes over time in terms of what was recorded, as follows:

Biographical / Historical
The recording of the first matriculation of students at Edinburgh University appears to have begun in 1869 after the introduction of new regulations for University Matriculation in the Universities (Scotland) Act 1858.
