Scope and Contents

These volumes contain the names of students, recorded at the occasion of the first time of matriculating. Subsequent years of matriculating were not recorded here, but are recorded in the Matriculation Albums. Occasionally students who changed courses were recorded again. There were changes over time in terms of what was recorded, as follows:

Under terms of the Data Protection Act, student records are closed where they relate to living individuals. Records for individuals who did or would have graduated less than 75 years ago will only be made available where proof is given that the individual in question is deceased.

Biographical / Historical

The recording of the first matriculation of students at Edinburgh University appears to have begun in 1869 after the introduction of new regulations for University Matriculation in the Universities (Scotland) Act 1858.
