He expresses dismay that he is being transferred to Texas from Washington, where he can see no role for himself. He tells Geikie that he is considering writing a cowboy novel or possibly an historical novel about Davy Crockett. He expresses regret that he will not be able to attend a geologist's Congress meeting in Washington which Geikie is to attend, due to his change in career.
