Notebook No.74, March 1839 - May 1839

 Item — Box: Lyell-temp-box 3
Identifier: Coll-203/A1/74

Scope and Contents

This red leather notebook focusses on Charles Lyell's study of Norwich shells and crags, with George Sowerby and others. Other than a tour of Cambridge, he seems to be based in London in this notebook. He lists specimens and queries for colleagues including other collectors, such as Captain Alexander, and Mrs. Powers [Madame Jeannette Power, who is noted in the Magazine of Natural history 1839 as having formed a collection of Argonauta in 1838, and publishes in 1839]. From p. 19 and p. 46, Lyell is with G. Sow[erby] listing Crag shells. There are notes on Crag fossils, and on p.57 Lyell discusses reasons for confusion over identification of species. On pp.90-91 are Lyell's notes from his visit to Trimmer's pits, Brentford, Suffolk to examine Crag, 17 April. More lists of Norwich Crag specimens appear from p. 97. On p. 114 is a list of Norfolk shells 'retained', with a list of Touraine shells in 'drawers' from p. 120. The index is on p. 141, inside back cover.

The following table of contents is Lyell's own words, copied from Lyell's own "Index", found at the beginning and end of the notebook, transcribed from digital surrogates using the platform Transkribus. When known, Lyell's abbreviations and contractions have been expanded using brackets []. When writing is unclear, and transcription is not possible, this is denoted using [...]. Quotation marks are Lyell's own notation for ditto, as is the abbreviation "d'o". The inclusion of [sic] indicates the misspelling of a word is deliberate and taken from the notebook.
