Notebook No.75, 3 May 1839 - 4 June 1839
Scope and Contents
This red leather notebook continues Charles Lyell's work on studying and listing Crag and Touraine shells and specimens, continued from notebook 74, with GB Sowerby. Lyell appears to be based solely in London in the notebook. He notes queries for colleagues and observations on other's collections - Captain Alexander, Mr Bean, Mr Colchester, and Mrs. Power's [sic Madame Jeannette Power, who is noted in the Magazine of Natural history 1839 as having formed a collection of Argonauta in 1838]. A lot of these historical collections were in time given to the British Museum. P.25 illustrates his thoughts on extinct shells on one side of the Appenines, and recent shells on Sicily. P. 46 notes sales of new editions of Principles of Geology and Elements of Geology. P. 70 lists queries to Charlesworth on illustrations and copyright. P. 89 lists of Coralline Crag fossils in Mr. Woods collection. P. 121 Lyell writes on British Shells. P. 125 is a list of Bridlington shells sent by Wm Bean, and a note to see Notebook 78. P. 109 Lyell also notes his practice of cleaning shells. The index is on p. 138-139.
The following table of contents is Lyell's own words, copied from Lyell's own "Index", found at the beginning and end of the notebook, transcribed from digital surrogates using the platform Transkribus. When known, Lyell's abbreviations and contractions have been expanded using brackets []. When writing is unclear, and transcription is not possible, this is denoted using [...]. Quotation marks are Lyell's own notation for ditto, as is the abbreviation "d'o". The inclusion of [sic] indicates the misspelling of a word is deliberate and taken from the notebook.
