Notebook No.199, January 1855
Scope and Contents
The notebook opens with Charles Lyell in Bowood, where he examines local geology while traveling around the Wiltshire area. He records geological observations in Calne, Whetham, Derry Hill, Heddington, Melksham, and Foxham. Subsequently, Lyell travels back to London, passing through Reading. In London, Lyell makes notes on various geology-related topics and records several addresses. On 16 February 1855, he likely attends the Annual General Meeting of the Geological Society of London. As Lyell prepares for an upcoming trip to Germany and France, he includes lists of items and books to be packed in the notebook. Page 45 features a train schedule written in blue ink in an unknown hand.
The notebook contains many geological notes and some sketches. It is written in ink and pencil and does not include an index. However, in Lyell's Index Notebooks (Coll-203/A5/3, p. 20), there is a brief index, which has been transcribed here. Additionally, a longer summary index has been created. Where a section header used by Lyell has been identified, it is presented in quotation marks.
Lyell’s own index from Index Notebook 1860, reference Coll-203/A5/5 [was Coll-203/A5/3] p. 20
