Scope and Contents

"Diagnosis: Peurperal depression. This is a case of depression associated with pregnancy and the puerperium in which there are strong feelings of guilt and unworthiness and in which the patient has developed the fixed idea that she has V.D. Patient has five children. No trouble at previous pregnancies. All children healthy. Six weeks after the child was born, patient tried to commit suicide by hanging herself. Her husband thinks she did not really mean it and would not attempt it again. Patient thinks that her mind is breaking up; that she has never been right since the baby was born; thinks she has all kinds of physical illnesses; at present that she has V.D. Says she is better dead and has threatened several times to do away with herself. Husband is a poor witness, probably defective."
